Cuantificar los aportes de la naturaleza sobre la calidad de vida de la
humanidad es muy subjetivo y depende de diferentes perspectivas y escalas de
valor, tanto culturales como institucionales (Pascual et al., 2017). Dentro de
las contribuciones instrumentales de la naturaleza para las personas se
encuentra la biodiversidad y aquellos beneficios materiales que pueden
derivarse de la misma. La bioprospección, en su sentido más amplio, puede
definirse como la evaluación de la biodiversidad con el fin de encontrar un
uso de la misma para la solución de problemas específicos o mejoramiento de la
calidad de vida. Por ello, la bioprospección tiene un fin que es el
aprovechamiento de la biodiversidad. Los pilares de la bioprospección son la
investigación y evaluación (el conocimiento), la transformación del producto y
su comercialización.
La asignatura de Bioprospección pretende introducir a los estudiantes de
los Programas de Biología Ambiental y Biología Marina de UTADEO, los
diferentes aspectos relacionados con la valoración y el uso de la
biodiversidad. Esta asignatura presenta antecedentes, desarrollo, avances y
perspectivas de la investigación multidisciplinaria en bioprospección que se
realiza a nivel mundial y a nivel local.

Con el desarrollo de la asignatura se busca que el estudiante:
a) Profundice en algunos de los aspectos más relevantes de la
bioprospección, área interdisciplinaria de las ciencias químicas y biológicas.
b) Reconozca cuáles son los aspectos fundamentales a tener en cuenta
cuando se realizan investigaciones en el área de bioprospección.
c) Reconozca el potencial de las especies locales para adelantar
iniciativas de emprendimiento a partir de la biodiversidad.-
